government impact on the telecoms sector

With the election just behind us, it’s time to think about what it means for our sector. No matter the economic ups and downs, our industry has shown it’s here to stay – there’s always a need for ICT services. After any election, there’s usually a push for economic improvement, and Labour’s focus on wealth creation could be a real boost for everyone.

In this blog, I’ll look back at how well the previous government supported our industry and whether the new one should keep things rolling as they are or shake things up.

what are your immediate feelings following the election, in regards to its impact on the sector?

Our sector thrives despite of economic conditions, we’ve proven that over the past 4 years; there’s always demand for ICT services.

Following any general election, economic improvement is inevitable. Starmer’s emphasis on wealth creation is promising for a Labourgovernment. If Labour truly commits to boosting the UK’s economy, it benefits everyone.

how successful was the previous government in ensuring the sector could flourish and does the incoming government need to prioritise continuity?

Government influence through regulation is crucial. The Telecommunications (Security) Act 2021 significantly affected internet and data security. Responding to public opinion on emotive issues is key, but we must ensure technical and societal factors are balanced in future policies.

what legislative changes could Labour make to improve upon the current landscape and help take the sector even further?

Labour needs to drive growth, innovation, and sustainability within the sector.

Continued investment into digital infrastructure, plus data protection and security legislation is inevitable.

Skills development programmes and funding for R&D could fuel innovation. I expect Labour will drive green technology which could position the UK’s ICT sector as a world leader.

how much faith do you have in the incoming government to deliver benefits for the sector?

The focus on economic growth and European cooperation instils reasonable faith in Labour’s potential to benefit our sector.
